I have always drawn. As far as drawing is concerned, I am almost totally self-taught. I have experienced many techniques, such as pencil and pen, oil, acrylic or pastel. However, nowadays I almost exclusively work with felt-pens on Bristol paper. This tool enables me to be as precise as I need to be in my drawings. I also tried out, in the winter of 2009, the traditional technique of lithography.
My work is figurative, or rather, as I like to say, para-figurative, as it concerns everything that surrounds, upholds and borders on the figurative. Influenced by such painters and graphists as Bosch, Durer, Escher or Scott Kim, as well as by all of the expressionist movement, my conception of graphic art is as rational as it is emotional.
More than forty years ago, my first drawings often pictured strange beings, half animal, half dragon. They were closely inspired by traditional heraldry. Today, I have come full circle, and I am returning to my roots. After trying out many styles, I just recently made the most interesting encounter, that of the Rencontre… In French heraldry, the word 'Rencontre' (meaning 'Encounter') is masculine, and refers to the head of an animal seen full face and presenting both eyes. I stretched the concept a little so that it would encompass humans as well as animals. Nowadays, without it being my only type of drawing, the Rencontre has become my favourite theme.
Not too long ago, people would hire painters to make their portraits... Those who are interested by my artistic statement can obtain the works exposed in my virtual gallery. I also draw by request and you can order the Rencontre of the person or animal of your choice.
